Finland maintains an extensive network of over 50,500 underground shelters as part of its preparedness against potential Russian aggression, officials revealed. These facilities, such as the Merihaka shelter in Helsinki, are designed to accommodate thousands of people during emergencies, housing essential amenities including play areas and latrines. Built in 2003, Merihaka can transform from a recreational space into a secure refuge for 6,000 individuals within 72 hours.
Since the escalation of conflict in Ukraine beginning in February 2022, Finnish authorities have intensified readiness measures, as noted by Anna Lehtiranta, a communications officer at Helsinki’s rescue department. Finland has the longest EU border with Russia, spanning over 830 miles. Deputy Director General Mikael Antell highlighted the nation’s vigilant stance, stating that the threat has amplified since joining NATO in April 2023.
The Finnish Constitution mandates national defense participation, which includes compulsory military service for men. With 900,000 reservists, Finland boasts the highest number within the EU, underscoring its commitment to national security amidst regional tensions.
