Survivors of severe storms in the Philippines joined Greenpeace activists outside Shell's headquarters in London on February 12, 2025, to demand accountability from major polluters for the damage caused by climate change. Ronalyn Carbonel, a resident of Rizal, experienced a harrowing storm firsthand with her children's lives at stake, stating, "We had no shelter, we did not have food... we just had to wait for the government."
As the Philippines faces an increase in the frequency and intensity of typhoons, experts blame the worsening conditions on climate change. Last year, six typhoons struck the Philippines in just a month, with super-typhoon Man-yi displacing over 650,000 people and costing around $500 million in damages.
During the protest, activists showcased belongings, including Carbonel's destroyed sofa and television, submerged in glass cases filled with water. Greenpeace UK’s Maja Darlington criticized oil and gas companies like Shell for profiting from fossil fuels while communities suffer the consequences. Carbonel expressed her frustration, saying, "For someone like me, what can I do?"
