A federal judge has issued a second temporary ban on President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at revoking birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants. U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman ruled that the Trump administration’s interpretation of the 14th Amendment has not been endorsed by any court and deemed it "blatantly unconstitutional," echoing a previous decision from Washington state, where four states are currently challenging the order.
The 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, guarantees citizenship to all individuals born in the U.S., a principle that immigrant-rights groups argue is foundational to American democracy. CASA and the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project are among the plaintiffs backing the suit, which seeks to reinforce the birthright citizenship principle against Trump’s executive actions.
While 22 states have filed lawsuits against the administration's order, 18 Republican attorneys general are supporting Trump’s position. This robust legal battle could significantly impact the future of immigration policy in the U.S.
