Tensions Rise in South Sudan as Vice President Riek Machar is Placed Under House Arrest

A small plane crash in South Sudan's Unity State has resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people, with only one confirmed survivor. The aircraft, which took off from an oil field en route to the capital Juba, went down approximately 500 meters from the airport shortly after takeoff at around 10:30 AM local time, according to Unity State’s Minister for Information, Gatwech Bipal Both.
The Ukrainian-manufactured plane, chartered by the Greater Pioneer Operating Company and operated by Light Air Services Aviation Company, was transporting employees, including 16 South Sudanese, two Chinese nationals, and one Indian citizen. The survivor, a South Sudanese engineer, has been hospitalized in Bentiu State.
President Salva Kiir expressed profound sorrow over the incident and called for a thorough investigation by relevant authorities. The crash comes amid ongoing concerns over the safety of air travel in South Sudan, which has faced chronic instability and inadequate transport infrastructure since its independence in 2011. Overloading and adverse weather conditions have been cited as contributing factors in previous aviation accidents in the region.
