Record Ocean Heat Signals Urgent Climate Crisis, Say Researchers

A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station resulted in at least 18 fatalities and multiple injuries on Saturday night, reportedly due to overcrowding. Witnesses stated that the incident began when a passenger slipped on the stairs amid a large crowd of travelers awaiting delayed trains, including one bound for the Kumbh Mela, a major Hindu festival taking place in Prayagraj city.
Officials criticized Indian Railways for inadequate crowd management, prompting an investigation into the incident. According to a spokesperson, the situation escalated as individuals were pushed against each other on the overhead bridge, staircases, and platforms. Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing experiences, with accounts of individuals being trapped and unable to breathe.
Victims were transported to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where reports indicated overcrowded facilities. The aftermath has spurred anger among families who felt that authorities failed to act promptly to prevent the tragedy. Umesh Giri, who lost his wife in the crush, expressed his frustration, saying, "the crowd became uncontrollable." The affected families are now receiving compensation, and authorities are facing heightened scrutiny regarding safety measures at public transport hubs.
