Sudanese Civil War Leads to Devastating Humanitarian Crisis

An attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Sabrein Market in Omdurman, Sudan, resulted in the deaths of 54 people and injuries to at least 158 others, health authorities reported on February 2, 2025. This incident marks a troubling escalation in the ongoing civil war, which has significantly impacted the northeastern African nation since April 2023.
Khalid al-Aleisir, Sudan's minister of culture and government spokesperson, condemned the assault, stating that many casualties were women and children. He labeled the attack a "criminal act" constituting a "blatant violation of international humanitarian law." The Sudanese Doctors Syndicate noted that the Al-Naw Hospital, which received most casualties, is facing a severe shortage of medical personnel.
Recent reports indicate that the conflict has killed over 28,000 people and resulted in millions being displaced. The United Nations and human rights organizations describe the situation as dire, with allegations of war crimes and genocide against the RSF. The International Criminal Court is reportedly investigating these claims.
