A tragic crowd crush at the Kumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj, India, has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals and injured over 60, according to Uttar Pradesh police. The incident occurred during the auspicious rising of Mauni Amavasya, as millions gathered at the sacred confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers for ritual baths. Witnesses described escalating chaos as devotees rushed to the riverbank, leading to a fatal surge that trapped many underfoot.
The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years in Prayagraj, is deemed particularly special this year as it aligns with a rare astronomical event, attracting an expected 400 million pilgrims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose image dominated festival promotions, emphasized the event's significance for Hindu unity, but concerns about crowd safety have intensified following the tragedy.
Despite the chaos, festival activities continued as officials reported that over 76 million bathers participated on the day following the disaster. The local train station was temporarily shut down due to safety fears, underscoring the tensions surrounding the massive gathering.
