Sudanese Civil War Leads to Devastating Humanitarian Crisis

A brutal attack by the opposition Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on an open market in Omdurman, Sudan, has left at least 54 people dead and more than 158 injured, according to the Sudanese health ministry. The assault on Sabrein market marks a significant escalation in violence as the RSF continues its conflict with the Sudanese military, which began in April 2023.
The tragedy was condemned by Sudan's Culture Minister and government spokesperson Khalid al-Aleisir, who noted that the casualties included many women and children. He called the incident a "criminal act" that reflects the RSF's notorious history and violates international humanitarian law.
In a related incident, two civilians were killed Saturday in an airstrike targeting an RSF-controlled area in Khartoum. Local emergency response groups reported numerous injuries resulting from the strike. The ongoing conflict has claimed over 28,000 lives, resulting in mass displacements and severe food shortages, with some families resorting to eating grass to survive, the UN has reported.
The international criminal court is currently investigating potential war crimes and crimes against humanity in the region.
