Australian Woman on Trial for Allegedly Poisoning Family with Mushrooms

A Tasmanian court has found bouncy castle operator Rosemary Anne Gamble not guilty of wrongdoing in the 2021 accident that led to the deaths of six children at Hillcrest Primary School. The court ruled that the incident, attributed to an unforeseen weather event known as a dust devil, was impossible to predict, according to the BBC.
The victims, aged between 11 and 12, were participating in end-of-year celebrations when the bouncy castle was lifted by strong winds and fell approximately 10 meters. The incident shocked the Devenport community, prompting expressions of sorrow from then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein, who described it as "unthinkably heartbreaking."
Gamble faced charges in late 2023 for allegedly failing to secure the bouncy castle adequately. However, her defense argued that no additional precautions could have prevented the tragic outcome. Following the verdict, families expressed profound distress, with some parents reportedly in tears in the courtroom. Andrew Dodt, father of victim Peter Dodt, said, “Our hopes are just shattered now,” highlighting the emotional toll of the court's decision.
