Bolivian Judge Orders Arrest of Former President Evo Morales in Abuse Case

BOBolivia|

A Bolivian judge has issued an arrest warrant for former president Evo Morales, accusing him of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl during his presidency. The ruling follows Morales' repeated absences from court hearings related to the case. Judge Nelson Rocabado, from Tarija, has also imposed a freeze on Morales' assets and prohibited him from leaving Bolivia.

The allegations involve claims that Morales fathered a child with the minor in 2016, which would constitute statutory rape under Bolivian law. The prosecution has associated Morales with trafficking charges, arguing that the girl's parents were led to believe their daughter would benefit politically by enrolling in Morales' youth movement.

Morales, 65, has denied the allegations but has stated he is a victim of political persecution by the current president, Luis Arce. Despite the serious charges, Morales has refused to surrender power and remains a prominent figure within Bolivia's political landscape. His supporters have been actively protesting against the investigation, blocking roads and creating significant disruption.

The charges against him could result in a prison sentence ranging from 10 to 15 years. The case continues to unfold, drawing attention both nationally and internationally as it raises critical issues around power, justice, and the treatment of victims in Bolivia.

Investigation Uncovers Illegal Jaguar Hunting Network in Bolivia and Argentina

Authorities in Bolivia and Argentina have launched a criminal investigation into an illegal hunting network allegedly responsible for the deaths of endangered jaguars. According to reports, the Buenos Aires-based company Caza & Safaris offered hunting packages up to $50,000 for wealthy international clients, including Americans and Spaniards, luring them to Bolivian protected areas. In September 2023, Spanish businessman Luis Villalba Ruiz reportedly killed five jaguars in Bolivia, prompting Bolivian prosecutors to investigate his activities alongside Jorge Néstor Noya, the head of Caza & Safaris, who is currently under house arrest in Argentina. Prosecutors indicated that both men face serious charges including biocide and destruction of national wealth, potentially leading to 19 years in prison. The Argentine Federal Police's August 2024 operation resulted in the seizure of over 3,000 hunting trophies, underscoring the extensive scope of this illegal operation that has reportedly been active since 1979. Both governments are probing possible complicity among local officials, following significant public outcry led by environmental activists.
