Body of Missing Indian Journalist Found in Chhattisgarh Septic Tank
The body of Mukesh Chandrakar, a 32-year-old journalist known for his investigations into alleged corruption in public construction projects, has been discovered in a septic tank in Chhattisgarh state, India. Chandrakar went missing on New Year's Day, prompting his family to file a police report.
Authorities located his body on Friday at a road construction contractor's property in the Bijapur district after tracing his mobile phone. Three individuals, including two relatives, have been arrested in connection with his death, while the main suspect, the owner of the property where the body was found, remains at large.
Initial police investigations on January 2 did not reveal any signs of foul play. However, a subsequent examination on January 3 led to the discovery of Chandrakar's body beneath concrete slabs covering the septic tank. The police stated that his body exhibited substantial injuries indicative of a blunt-force attack.
Chandrakar, a freelance journalist and popular YouTuber, operated the channel Bastar Junction and focused extensively on corruption in his region. Following his death, the Press Council of India has called for a thorough investigation, and local journalists have organized protests demanding accountability for the incident. The state's chief minister expressed deep sorrow over the journalist's death and announced the formation of a special investigation team.
India has a troubling history regarding the safety of journalists, particularly those investigating corruption or environmental issues. On average, three to four journalists are killed each year in the country for their work, making it one of the most dangerous environments for media personnel globally.
