Lufthansa Flight Operated for 10 Minutes Without Pilot Due to Medical Emergency

Albrecht Weinberg, a 99-year-old survivor of Auschwitz, announced his decision to return the Federal Cross of Merit due to troubling political shifts in Germany. According to Weinberg, the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) to push anti-immigration measures echoes the political climate of the 1930s, a period that led to the Holocaust in which his family perished. Speaking to EL PAÍS, he expressed deep concern, stating, “If you give extremists an inch, they’ll take a mile.”
Weinberg, who has dedicated years to educating German youth about the Holocaust, emphasized the importance of vigilance against rising extremism. Despite recent protests against AfD's influence in the Bundestag, he expressed hope after a proposal to tighten immigration laws was rejected last week. He plans to meet with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to discuss his decision but remains resolute in his choice to return the Cross, highlighting the potential consequences of political alliances with extremist factions.
